Dear Parents,

Welcome to December!  I had sent an email out on Sunday inviting parents to share their holiday traditions this month, come and read to the kids during their Pajama Day, and to inform you of Grade One ES Game Day on the 17th.

On Friday, we had a wonderful time searching and studying rocks with Mr. Werner (a real life geologist!), Mrs. Werner, and Mr. Seaman.  The kids became geologists and scoured the school for rocks to collect.  We now have lots of interesting rocks to investigate further and sort in many different ways.  I would like to thank the parents who volunteered for this session for making this activity so much fun for the kids!

Also, on Friday, the class celebrated the end of the Writing for Readers unit by sharing their writing with Mrs. Hardman’s class.  It’s amazing to see how much better they have grown as writers in such a short amount of time.  We will be entering the next unit of writing called The Craft of Revision.  This is actually my favorite unit to teach because the children begin to make connections from the stories they read to their own writing.  They study how authors of the books they read add details, begin the story with a strong lead, think about their writing and plan what to do next, and so much more!  As you can see, I get very excited about teaching the unit and the kids will hopefully be just as excited!

Just a reminder that you can quickly see what blog entries that only pertain to our class by clicking on Ms. Yoo under the Teachers section found on the left side of the main page.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Monday- We miss Patrick! We are looking forward to him coming back from China. We have been talking about how the airport closing can really cause some problems. During reading workshop we learned that readers have thoughts while they read. One thing they do is talk back to the text. We practiced with our new shared reading book for the week and then we practiced talking back to the book with our partners. In the afternoon we worked to solve an addition story problem. We had to use what we have learned about estimating and we had to choose a strategy to use like counting all, counting on or using a number combination. We had choice time today. We could create something from the scrap paper, use any game on the computer, read any book or explore the rock collection. We also celebrated Guilliano’s birthday today! Happy Birthday!

Tuesday- This morning we learned about editing our writing to make it better. We learned that this is different from revising. Revising is changing the ideas and editing is cleaning up our writing. We helped Ms. Burdge revise one of Ido’s pieces. We put in some punctuation, capital letters and we circled some words that are not spelled correctly. Then we worked with our writing partners to correct another sample piece. Then we tried editing one of our own pieces. During reading workshop we continued to learn what it looks and sounds like when readers have thoughts when they read. Today we noticed when we had feelings when we read.  We shared those with our partners. In the afternoon we read independently. Ms. Burdge read us another read aloud from one of our new book baskets. We also showed what we know in math. We solved an addition story problem using some of the strategies we have learned. We also played the addition games in math workshop.
